Sandstone is a type of sedimentary rock formed of gritty sand grains and is available in a variety of colours.

Sandstone paving is available in a range of different textures, often relying on secondary processing to achieve these finishes. 

Handcut Riven Sandstone

This type of sandstone forms our standard sandstone range. The surface texture is rough and has occasional ridges and the edges of the slabs are tapered. This is the most economical type of sandstone. This sandstone may be of random thickness, usually ranging between 25-40mm. Some brands however, offer calibrated paving which means the paving has been cut to a consistent thickness, usually around 22mm, to make it easier to lay. This does not affect the quality. The handcut riven style of sandstone paving has the widest choice of colours across all brands.
Antique, Tumbled Sandstone Antique style sandstone has been through a secondary process to make it appear aged and weatherworn. This process smoothes the surface to provide a more gentle riven texture and softens the edges of the stone, making it suitable for period homes where a new stone would look out of place.
Smooth, Sawn Sandstone This sandstone has a level, smooth surface and often, machine cut edges to give a sharp, clean appearance suited to modern, contemporary styles. The surface texture can be smooth to the touch or have a slightly rough sand-blasted texture to provide non-slip qualities.

Sandstone is available in a wide range of colours, some subtle and some vivid. The colour intensity increases when the paving is wet. Most brands offer the same range of colours with slightly different names. BE AWARE that not ALL sandstone is the same quality - some unknown brands may not have been tested for suitability in the UK climate and may crack during cold weather. The following chart shows our opinion of each brand's name for their sandstone range. Please bear in mind that colour variations can occur between different brands and batches of paving and this information should only be used as a guide.
