Furthermore, one of the standout advantages of sandstone paving is its affordability, making it a cost-effective option without compromising on quality or aesthetics.

What are the disadvantages of sandstone paving?

While sandstone paving offers a wide range of advantages, it's important to consider some potential drawbacks before making a decision. One notable disadvantage is the inherent variation in colour and natural characteristics of sandstone. As a natural stone, the colour can vary between individual stones and across different packs, sometimes resulting in variations that may not meet customers' specific preferences. Additionally, sandstone may exhibit natural characteristics such as veins, mineral deposits, varying textures, and occasional fossil imprints. While these features are appreciated by many for their unique beauty, some individuals may find them less desirable or unsightly. In such cases, porcelain paving, which offers a more consistent appearance, could be a better alternative. Another aspect to consider is that while natural sandstone itself does not fade, the colours may subtly change over time as the stone weathers, potentially altering the original aesthetic. Furthermore, lighter shades of sandstone have a slightly higher tendency to develop algae growth compared to darker or grey tones, necessitating more frequent cleaning and maintenance.

Do sandstone slabs need to be sealed?

Sealing sandstone slabs is commonly recommended to enhance their durability and protect them from potential damage. While sandstone is inherently durable, its natural porosity, whilst low, makes it susceptible to staining and water absorption. By applying a sealer, a protective barrier is created on the surface of the stone, helping to repel moisture and prevent stains from penetrating deep into the material. Sealing also facilitates easier cleaning and maintenance by preventing dirt, grime, and other contaminants from seeping into the tiny pores of the stone. It's worth noting that high-quality sealers specifically designed for natural stone, known as "impregnator" sealers, are often preferred. These sealers penetrate the pores of the stone, gradually wearing evenly over time, as opposed to older-style polymer-based sealers that create a topical layer on top of the stone, which can wear unevenly. By choosing the appropriate sealer and following the manufacturer's instructions, you can ensure the long-term protection and beauty of your sandstone slabs.

Is sandstone paving slippery?

Sandstone paving generally provides a good level of slip resistance, but its slipperiness can vary depending on factors such as the surface texture, finish, and weather conditions. Sandstone with a naturally riven or textured surface tends to offer better traction and grip, making it less slippery. However, smoother finishes like honed or polished sandstone also meet the minimum safety requirements for a paving surface, even when wet or in areas with high moisture. As a guide, a sawn and honed sandstone would typically measure 50 when dry and 44 when wet using the Pendulum Test table. This test involves swinging a pendulum over the stone's surface, which measures its deceleration. A rougher surface will slow down the pendulum more, resulting in a higher value known as the Pendulum Test Value (PTV). The test is conducted under both wet and dry conditions. For external use in wet conditions, the minimum acceptable PTV is 36. In areas where slip resistance is a concern, selecting a sandstone variety with a textured or riven finish can help enhance traction and reduce the risk of slipping. Regular maintenance, such as keeping the paving clean and free of debris, can also contribute to maintaining its slip-resistant properties.

How long does sandstone paving last?

Sandstone paving is known for its durability and longevity when properly installed and maintained. The lifespan of sandstone paving can vary depending on several factors. In general, high-quality sandstone paving can last for several decades, typically ranging from 30 to 50 years or even longer. The longevity of sandstone paving is influenced by factors such as the quality of the stone, the quality of the installation, the level of foot traffic it experiences, and the climate conditions in the area. Adequate installation techniques, including a well-prepared base and proper jointing, can contribute to the longevity of the paving. Regular cleaning and maintenance, such as removing debris and preventing the buildup of moss or algae, can help extend the lifespan of sandstone paving. With proper care, sandstone paving can provide a beautiful and functional outdoor surface for many years to come.

Does sandstone paving go green?

Sandstone paving has the potential to develop a greenish hue or become green over time, particularly in damp or shaded areas. This green discolouration is typically caused by the growth of algae, moss, or lichen on the surface of the stone. Sandstone's porous nature, although low, and the presence of moisture create an ideal environment for these organisms to thrive. However, not all sandstone paving will necessarily turn green, as it depends on various factors such as the specific type of sandstone, local climate conditions, and the level of moisture and sunlight exposure. Light colours of sandstone are more porous than darker or grey tones and therefore are more prone to mositure absorption which leads to algae. Regular maintenance, including cleaning the paving and keeping it free from organic debris, can help prevent or minimise the growth of algae and moss. Additionally, applying a suitable biocide or algaecide treatment can help inhibit the growth of greenery, although be careful to avoid garden plants as an algae remover will damage them. Ultimately, proactive maintenance and ensuring adequate sunlight and drainage can help preserve the original appearance of sandstone paving.

What do you lay sandstone paving on?

Sandstone paving is typically laid on a stable and well-prepared base to ensure its longevity and proper installation. The recommended base for sandstone paving is commonly referred to as a "Type 1" or "MOT Type 1" sub-base, which is a granular material made from crushed stones or recycled aggregates. This sub-base provides a solid and even foundation that helps distribute the weight of the paving and prevents uneven settlement. It also aids in effective drainage and minimises the risk of frost damage. Prior to laying the sandstone paving, it is important to ensure that the sub-base is adequately compacted and levelled. Additionally, a full wet mortar bed is typically used to secure the sandstone slabs in place, providing stability and reducing the risk of movement or shifting. Properly preparing the base and using a wet mortar bed help ensure a strong and durable installation of sandstone paving, allowing it to withstand various weather conditions and foot traffic over time.
