What is the best brick for a driveway?

When it comes to selecting the ideal block paving product for a driveway, several important considerations must be taken into account, including appearance, property style and budget. Concrete block paving emerges as a popular choice, offering affordability and a diverse array of shapes, colours, and patterns. Ranging from sleek and contemporary designs to pavers resembling old cobble setts, concrete block paving provides excellent durability, making it well-suited for driveways. These pavers are often available in different thicknesses to accommodate varying traffic loads. Another popular option, clay bricks are highly regarded for their inherent strength and long-lasting nature. With a wide range of rich earthy colours, from warm terracottas to shades of grey, clay bricks effortlessly complement both traditional and ultra-modern styles. Natural stone block paving combines the ease of installation of a block paving product with the captivating allure of subtle, natural stone colours. Ultimately, selecting the best block paving for a driveway depends on personal preferences, the desired appearance, and the specific requirements of the project.

Can bricks be used for driveway?

Using standard house-bricks for a driveway is not recommended due to their inability to withstand the weight and stress of vehicular traffic, as well as their lack of frost resistance in winter conditions. However, block paving (sometimes known as brick weave) is specifically engineered and constructed to meet the rigorous demands of driveways. Block paving typically consists of interlocking concrete units, although natural stone and clay options are available as well (although these are not interlocking). These specially designed blocks provide exceptional strength, durability, and stability. They are crafted using high-quality materials that can bear the weight of vehicles without succumbing to cracks or breakage. Additionally, block paving exhibits remarkable resistance to frost and other weathering effects, ensuring its reliability and performance even in cold weather. The versatility of block paving shines through with its diverse range of styles, colours, and patterns, enabling homeowners to create unique and personalised driveway designs. This not only adds to the overall aesthetic appeal of the property but also delivers the practical functionality required for a durable and visually pleasing driveway solution.

Are 50mm blocks OK for driveway?

The suitability of 50mm blocks for a driveway depends on several factors, including the expected vehicular weight. While 50mm blocks can be used for most domestic driveways, there are 60mm and 80mm blocks available for heavier use and commercial settings. If the driveway is expected to experience heavy traffic, it may be more advisable to opt for thicker blocks that can provide greater durability and load-bearing capacity. However, for general residential use, 50mm blocks are a suitable option. Ultimately, it is recommended to consult with professionals or specialists in paving to assess the specific requirements of the project and determine the most appropriate block thickness for the desired driveway.

How thick should driveway blocks be?

The appropriate thickness of driveway blocks depends on various factors, including the expected traffic load and the type of block paving material being used. In general, for standard vehicular traffic, a thickness of 50mm is commonly recommended for concrete and natural stone block paving. This thickness provides sufficient strength and durability to withstand the weight of vehicles without compromising the integrity of the driveway. For areas that anticipate heavier loads or commercial applications, thicker blocks in the range of 60mm for heavy domesitic to 80mm for commercial may be more suitable to ensure long-lasting performance.

Can you lay bricks directly on concrete?

While it is technically possible to lay block paving directly onto a concrete bed, it is not the typical approach for a new project. Instead, a more common method involves excavating the ground and preparing a suitable base for the block paving installation. This process typically includes excavating the area and compacting a layer of MOT Type 1, approximately 150mm thick, to provide a stable foundation. Edging blocks are then set in a mortar bed to define the perimeter, and the remaining blocks are laid on top of a compacted layer of sharp sand or grit. After the blocks are in place, a plate compactor with rubber mat is used to compact them further, ensuring a sturdy and level surface. Finally, kiln-dried sand is brushed into the joints between the blocks to stabilise them and prevent shifting. This meticulous process ensures the long-term durability and stability of the block paving installation.

What are the disadvantages of paving bricks?

Paving blocks offer numerous benefits, but it's important to be aware of a few potential drawbacks as well. One thing to consider is the higher initial cost compared to other driveway options like gravel. Further to this, if not properly maintained, weeds may find their way between the block joints. However, you can use a sand stabiliser to prevent weed growth by making the sand surface harder. It's also important to know that the kiln-dried sand used for filling the joints may need periodic replacement over time, but using a sand stabiliser can help reduce sand loss. Another area of concern is when areas of heavy wear appear to cause the paving to dip, however, this is usually due to poor installation methods where insufficient sub-base material was used. Lastly, keep in mind that while concrete block paving products may fade over time, natural stone and clay options tend to maintain their true colours for longer. By ensuring proper installation and regular maintenance, you can overcome these challenges and create a long-lasting and visually appealing paved area.

Do I need to seal a brick driveway?

Whether or not to seal a brick weave driveway is a matter of personal preference and specific circumstances. Sealing can provide several benefits, such as enhancing the appearance of the blocks, protecting them from stains, making them easier to clean and reducing colour fading caused by exposure to the elements and powerwashing. Sealing can sometimes also help prevent the growth of weeds and moss between the joints. However, it's important to note that sealing is not mandatory for all block pving driveways. Some homeowners prefer the natural, weathered look of unsealed blocks. Additionally, care should be taken in choosing a sealant product as some polymer based products will wear away leaving patches which are unsightly. An impregnator sealant is often a better option as this gradually weathers evenly over a number of years. All the sealants offered by Paving Superstore are impregnator varieties.

Do you need planning permission for a block driveway?

Planning permission is required if you are planning to block paving your front driveway or extend the existing footprint to accommodate an area that is currently unpaved. There are two options to avoid the need to obtain planning permission: The first is to use a permeable paving block as part of the SUDS drainage system. This requires the use of specific sizes of aggregates under the paving to assist in the water percolating through.

The second and usually more favoured option is to ensure effective drainage of surface water by directing it to a soakaway within the property boundary. By implementing a well-designed drainage system, surface water can be efficiently managed and dispersed without the need for additional permissions.

For conservation areas, listed properties or if any doubt, consult your local planning office for advice.
