2016 Paving Trends
This year's garden design trends focus on using high quality, premium materials to create a garden that compliments the home and provides an extension to the living space. This not only improves the saleability in an ever increasing buoyant market, but also enhances the sense of well-being of the home-owner.
Simple lines using large element flags are especially popular with leading designers, whilst intricate detailing and texture are provided by linear or plank style paving. This combined with architectural planting with bold colour and texture create the ideal garden for 2016. Larger flags are available in many sawn finished products where each piece forms a work of art with its unique colour palette and natural characteristics. The clean lines create an illusion of uncluttered space and sheer simplicity that complements good design. By contrast, the new, broader range of linear paving may be used in conjuction with other sizes of paving to add texture to large expanses or alternatively, designs may incorporate the linear flags as a tool for technical enhancement of the garden area, for example, by visually increasing the width of a narrow corridor when used widthways.
A key product within the garden designer's toolbox this year is the increased range of porcelain paving that either emulates the look and feel of natural stone or brings its own wealth of contemporary style features in addition to the ease of maintenance associated with the minimal porosity associated of this material. New styles offer a greater range of textures and colours including wood style finish.
Colour palettes have broadened out this year and there are many more colour choices than in previous years. Natural stone is being celebrated for its variation in colour rather than its uniformity and new darker grey colours of stone have increased in popularity and appeal. Many products now offer an indoor and outdoor version of the same material which provides an ideal solution to those requiring a seamless transition between home and garden.
Natural riven sandstone and limestone remain popular as ever as a result of the competitive pricing, longevity of service and overall good value of these types of products. The rebirth of the traditional styled garden has increased popularity of the broad range of sandstone, both tumbled and naturally riven and limestone products as a durable and cost effective alternative to manmade concrete paving. The tumbled, antique products offer an aged appearance that complements the features of older style period homes and weathers down to create a subtle, pleasing appearance that blends well with natural building materials. Paving flags used in conjunction with other features such as cobble setts and pebbles or cobbles create a rustic, cottage garden charm. Textured products such as wood effect paving add further character to traditionally styled gardens.
