Case study showing GftK vdw 800 used for pointing a driveway stone sett circle

This driveway was designed with concentric circles of black limestone and raj green sandstone setts surrounded by Indian sandstone slabs, with a triple edge band of the same black limestone setts. The paving was all pointed using GftK’s vdw 800: the unique, 2-part, epoxy resin bound sand paving jointing mortar.

GftK's vdw 800 jointing mortar was selected because it is easily able to accommodate the regular 4x4 traffic over the driveway, together with visiting delivery vehicles of up to 20 tons; plus the jointing work had to be completed quickly and on schedule, in order to enable access to the property, without delays due to the cold, wet and damp weather that was forecast.

Case study showing repointing of a mixed brick and concrete slab path with GftK vdw 800

This existing footpath of was approximately 15 years old and had already been repointed at least twice previously with traditional and then prebagged sand and cement pointing mixes, but the 5 - 15mm wide joints had deteriorated again due to weathering and frost action.

The problem was solved by repointing with GftK 800 Paving Jointing Mortar from NCC Streetscape, which has also significantly improved the appearance of the whole front of the property. This mortar can be applied quickly and efficiently as a self compacting slurry, even in cold and wet conditions – this job was easily completed without weather delays in the cold and extremely wet month of November.

Case study showing GftK vdw 815 used for grouting porcelain paving

GftK vdw 815 Paving Joint Mortar is a unique, 2-component, epoxy resin based, material that is designed for durable sealing of narrow joints, making it ideal for grouting porcelain paving with joint widths from 3mm, though normally recommended spacing for larger format external porcelain tiles is 5-8mm to avoid edge alignment issues.

When grouting newly laid porcelain after the tiles are firmly bonded in position and strong enough to walk on, the surface must always be rinsed clean and then dried. This is also an opportune time to protect the pristine surface against future staining and residues from building works. This is done by applying NCC Porcelain Tile Protector and allowing this to dry, prior to the grouting operation.

GftK vdw 850 Paving Jointing Mortar used for the refurbishment and re-pointing of the granite sett paving in the historic Hitchin Market Square in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, UK. This shows the necessary cleaning and preparation required, followed by the mixing and installation of the vdw 850 paving jointing mortar.

Hitchin Town Market Place in Hertfordshire had its historic granite sett paving refurbished and made safe for shoppers, retailers and heavy delivery vehicles, all in time for the Christmas Shopping Markets and Celebrations in December 2009 – Despite the tight, four-week installation programme being during October and November 2009, which were also the wettest and highest rainfall in these months on record at the time!

Pavingexpert.com Revisiting GftK vdw 850 Granite Sett Pointing in Hitchin Market Square after 8+ years (in 2017)

This video is by Tony McCormack from www.PavingExpert.com making a visit in 2017 to inspect the granite sett paving in the historic Hitchen Market Square, which was extensively refurbished and completely repointed in the cold and wet weather experienced during October and November 2009, using GftK's vdw 850 Paving Jointing Mortar. This installation including the preparation and application of the vdw 850 was also witnessed and filmed at the time by the PavingExpert team.

“After 8 years it looks like it was jointed yesterday!” - were the words from Tony and the technical impaction team from PavingExpert.com when they visited to inspect the paving refurbishment that they had last witnessed underway on the site eight years ago, when the traditional granite sett paving of the historic Hitchin Market Square in Hertfordshire, was fully refurbished, and repointed with GftK vdw 850 Paving Joint Mortar. The expert continues: “Oh yes - The paving had been patched and pointed, re-pointed and grouted, glued and all sorts over the years, but nothing lasted long. They might get a couple of years, but before you knew it, the setts were a rocking and rolling all over again. Faced with the prospect of having to lift and re-lay the whole square, at huge cost, the Local Authority and their Consultants undertook some tests and decided to have one last roll of the dice with what looked like a very promising product: VDW 850 resin jointing mortar. ”Like many old town centres and their market squares around the UK, these are a very demanding environment for paving and particularly the paving pointing. This is due to the more joint-dependent nature of small-format paving, especially with the multiple heavy-duty loadings, from articulated trucks to vans and market stalls selling everything under the sun, plus all sorts of traffic exposure, then frequent cleaning, including with large mechanical street cleaners etc. However, despite this after more than 8 years the paving was looking good - and “like it was jointed yesterday!” – Some testaments to the performance of GftK vdw 850+.
